About this site
Purpose of this site
The FBAR & Form 8938 Checker is a free, independent tool that helps US persons — citizens, green card holders, and many visa holders — work out whether their foreign financial accounts trigger a US reporting obligation. These rules catch far more people than expected, and the penalties for missing them are severe.
Two separate filings are easy to confuse. The FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) is required if your foreign accounts together exceed $10,000 at any point in the year. Form 8938 is a separate IRS filing with higher thresholds that vary by filing status and whether you live abroad. This tool checks both at once.
How it works
The checker runs entirely in your browser. It takes your account totals, filing status, and whether you live in the US or abroad, then applies the FBAR $10,000 aggregate test and the Form 8938 thresholds to tell you which forms likely apply. Thresholds are simplified; the IRS and FinCEN govern.
Independent and neutral
This is an independently operated site that builds simple tools to remove the friction from complex US tax rules. We are not affiliated with the IRS or FinCEN, and the checker does not collect or store your figures — everything is processed locally in your browser.
Before you rely on it
Reporting rules have important exceptions, and the result here is an informational estimate, not tax or legal advice. Please review our disclaimer and consult a qualified US tax professional, especially if you have unfiled past years.
